Over the years, porcelain paving has established itself as a go-to option for garden landscaping and home improvement projects because of its durability and resilience to both indoor and outdoor living.
Even though porcelain slabs are taking over the paving market, they are still relatively new on the scene and because of this a lot of unanswered questions remain about the product.
At Porcelain Paving Direct, we have talked a lot about the many structural advantages porcelain paving boasts in comparison to natural stone paving. However, when it comes to installation and maintenance of porcelain, we feel there is something else you need to know.
It is a well known fact that natural stone paving requires sealing to ensure it is water-tight and cracking won’t be an issue after installation. If you are looking into having porcelain paving installed in your property, you may be wondering whether it too requires sealing.
If you are looking for a short answer, porcelain paving does not need to be sealed. One of the many benefits of porcelain paving is its low porosity.
Similarly to ceramic tiles, porcelain is fired in a kiln but at a much higher temperature. As a result of this, porcelain vitrifies and turns into an extremely dense material. This process leaves the porcelain slab with incredible strength and low porosity, usually under 0.05%.
Low porosity in porcelain paving means that there is very little space in the composition to allow any type of moisture to get in. As an opposite comparison you can think of a sponge having high porosity; it can absorb large amounts of moisture.
Due to porcelain paving slabs being non–porous, this means that they are moisture, stain, fade and slip resistant.
