Does porcelain paving require sealing?

The short answer is no, porcelain paving doesn’t require sealing. One of the many benefits of porcelain paving slabs is that they are non-porous, unlike natural stone.

Low porosity means there is next to no space in the composition of the tiles to allow moisture to get in. As an opposing comparison, a sponge has very high porosity and absorbs lots of moisture, whereas due to the low porosity levels porcelain paving is moisture, stain, fade, and slip resistant.

You might now be wondering why the porosity levels of porcelain are so low. This is because porcelain is fired in a kiln in a similar way that ceramic tiles are, but porcelain is fired at a considerably higher temperature.

Following this, porcelain undergoes a vitrification process, which means it converts into a highly dense material. The vitrification is what results in the incredible strength of the porcelain paving slabs, as well as low porosity of under 0.05%.
